Starehe Girls' Centre borehole up & running

November 2010
The physical geography of the site of the girls’ school presented considerable challenges to the development of infrastructure. The elevated site of the Girls’ Centre meant that water pressure from pipes was non-existent. Until recently, sometimes water had to be brought to the school by tanker. This was not only expensive, but insufficient and unsustainable. The good news is that as a result of StareheFuture’s generous donors, the borehole at the girls’ school is now up and running. As a result Starehe Girls’ Centre now has its own safe water source for drinking, cooking and cleaning. Water supply, sanitation, hygiene and health are crucial to the schools’ success. We are delighted that future generations of Starehe girls will benefit from improved hygiene and sanitation.

Summer-Term Fundraising at Benenden School bears fruit!

July 2010

Benenden students; Annabel Lee, Natasha Macgregor, Fiona Grant, Sarah Raffan and Nicole Kiang, with former SBC Captain, David Munene and Starehe Appeal staff, Lisa Robinson and Lucy Fisher

A huge thank you goes out to the girls of Benenden School who very generously dedicated the fruits of their summer-term fundraising efforts to StareheFuture. This consisted of a spare change collection at the school's Speech Day service, where The Very Reverend Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster Abbey, addressed the girls and their parents.

The Dean spoke of his time at Starehe, where he volunteered during a year out between School and University, and where he says he was particularly inspired by Dr Geoffrey Griffin, Starehe's founding father. We are particularly grateful to two girls - Fiona Grant and Sarah Raffan - who sold refreshments during their breaks from lessons, donating all profits to Starehe.

Altogether the girls raised a fantastic £1,015, a superb amount which could buy shorts and t-shirts for each student to participate in P.E.! We are extremely grateful to all who took part and we hope their example will lead the way for other schools to fundraise for Starehe too!

Charity scrum at London Rugby Sevens!

May 2010
We were delighted to have been granted a fantastic opportunity in May to make a charity collection at the London Rugby Sevens at Twickenham, where some 30,000 rugby fans gathered to watch teams from sixteen different countries compete.

Thanks to the enthusiastic and committed efforts of a number of our treasured volunteers in the scorching heat, and with the generosity of the spectators, we were able to collect a fabulous £1,350 for the Starehe Centres! This could pay for a student’s fees and board at Starehe for two years, which includes all their food and clothing as well as costs for their education and medical care, so thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.

Buckingham Palace opens its doors to StareheFuture

May 2010
The summer season kicked off to an exciting start for Starehe, with a private dinner for around twenty supporters in the Queen’s private dining rooms at Buckingham Palace, in the presence of our guest of honour HRH The Princess Royal. Her Royal Highness, as a long-term supporter of Starehe, engaged and motivated guests with her personal enthusiasm for the Starehe Boys’ and Girls’ Centres. We are also extremely grateful to the Centre for Young Musicians (CYM) which provided a string quartet for the evening, and whose music complemented the stunning surrounds of the Palace perfectly.

This is the third StareheFuture event HRH has generously attended as guest of honour, and we remain grateful for her ongoing and invaluable support.

Chris DeSouza took part in the Brighton Marathon 2009 to raise funds for Starehe

Altogether the runners raised more than £3,800, which is an incredible fundraising effort! Thank you to those who signed up to run for Starehe and helped raise such a staggering amount – and to those who generously sponsored them – your contributions will have a real impact on the Starehe Centres.
